Event description: 

The Nairobi Convention is organizing a series of meetings which will be held back to back from 13-17 November 2017 in Mahe Seychelles, pursuant to the decisions of the Eighth Conference of parties to the Nairobi Convention. The planned meetings contribute to building on previous successes and strengthening and increasing linkages between partners, programmes and implementation of projects, as part of the Nairobi Convention work programme for 2013-2017.

  1. Training on Marine Spatial Planning on 13-14 November 2017.

The training on Marine Spatial Planning is organized by Nairobi Convention in collaboration with Blue Solutions, United Nations Environment Programme-World Conservation and Monitoring Center (UNEPWCMC), Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO) The training is organized pursuant to Decision CP8/6c of the Eighth Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention on support and partnership for the implementation of the Strategic Action Programme for the protection of the Western Indian Ocean from land-based sources and activities financed by the Global Environmental Facility. The training will contribute to Component A of the project on Implementing the Strategic Action Programme for the protection of the Western Indian Ocean from land based sources and activities (WIOSAP) which focuses on sustainable management of the critical habitats . The training will also contribute in part to Activity 1.2.5 of the Western Indian Ocean Strategic Action Programme Policy Harmonization and Institutional Reforms (SAPPHIRE) project on co-developing and co-implementing a regional methodology for Marine Spatial Planning alongside the WIOSAP project and Activity 4.2.3 on identifying appropriate areas for demonstrating localized community Marine Spatial Planning linked to local economic development.

  1. Meeting on Area Based Planning Tools for Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction as part of implementation of the project on Sustainable Fisheries Management and Biodiversity conservation of deep sea living marine resources and ecosystems in the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction to be held on 14 November 2017.

The meeting is organized in partnership United Nations Environment Programme-World Conservation and Monitoring Center (UNEP-WCMC) and aims to present the progress in implementation of the fourth component of the Deep Seas project on developing and testing a methodology for area based planning in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction. The meeting is organized pursuant to the Eighth Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention Decision CP 8/6d on support to the project on Sustainable Fisheries Management and Biodiversity conservation of deep sea living marine resources and ecosystems in the Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the United Nations Environment Programme, under which Western Indian Ocean is one of the pilot areas for the project.

  1. Meeting on Seamounts and the Marine Spatial Atlas for Western Indian Ocean (MASPAWIO) Project on 15 November 2017.

The meeting is organized in partnership with International Union on Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and aims to present the results of the Seamounts project funded by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) and the Marine Spatial Atlas for the Western Indian Ocean (MASPAWIO) project funded by the French Aid Agency (AFD) to the WIO countries. The session is organized pursuant to the Eighth Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention Decision CP 8/6e on support to conservation and sustainable exploitation of seamount and hydrothermal vent systems of the South West Indian Ocean in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction and collaborate in the management of activities in their adjacent waters by the International Union on Conservation of Nature.

The Project Steering Committee meeting for WIOSAP project is organized following the Inception meeting for WIOSAP project held on 10-11 April 2017.The meeting will discuss the workplan and budget of the WIOSAP project. The i meeting is organized pursuant to the Eighth Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention Decision CP8/6c of the Eighth Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention on support and partnership for the implementation of the Strategic Action Programme for the protection of the Western Indian Ocean from land-based sources and activities financed by the Global Environmental Facility.
