UN Environment recognises that it cannot by itself address all the needs in environmental education and training effectively and fully. It has to focus and concentrate on selected targets and coordinate its intervention with the work of other United Nations agencies, international organisations, governments, educational institutions, civil society organisations and the private sector to ensure effective holistic approach with sustainable outcomes.
UN Environment works with these partners, where appropriate, to encourage improved coordination of efforts in environmental education and training in the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). This is in line with the UN Environment's objectives of strengthening the capacity of governments and institutions, promoting public participation, supporting action-taking initiatives, enhancing partnerships and networking, and providing environmental information for sustainable development. UN Environment has been a major player in environmental education, training and awareness raising.
